How effective is the Adkins Life Skills Program: Career Development Series? The Adkins Program is grounded in psychological and educational theory and research. It incorporates principles of career development stage and task theory, vocational identity and self-concept formation, and career maturity theory. It incorporates proven principles and methods of counseling and teaching. It is designed to help people address critical career development tasks, learn how to cope with internal and external barriers to achievement of goals and acquire the insights, knowledge and behaviors they need to move into new occupational and educational environments. There has been a reasonable amount of research on the effectiveness of the Adkins Life Skills Program: Career Development Series over the years The studies are diverse and reflect different settings, different types of clients and different purposes for which they were done. Some are rigorous doctoral dissertations done at Teachers College, Columbia University and other universities, others are multi-agency evaluation studies and some are in-house agency studies on program effectiveness. Though some of the studies were completed several years ago, their findings are pertinent today. The learning needs of the clients are substantially the same and though the Adkins Program has been improved with new video, audio and print materials in the three different editions, the basic design of the Program is substantially the same (group environment, the Four Stage Structured Learning Model and carefully developed learning activities.)
